Why Dallas Should (Needs to!) Win the NBA Finals

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/news/story?id=6614490

I think this quotation really sums up the whole article:

“Pull for Dallas because Nowitzki stayed with his team, never took his talents anywhere but to the damn gym every day.”

Last weekend of May

Isn’t that title interesting? You bet it is! So the Bulls lost to the Heat. This is very sad for a couple reasons. Obviously I’m from Chicago and love the Bulls, so that’s a big old bummer. Also, the Heat have been my least favorite team for a number of years. This also reinforces LeBron’s decision to go play basketball with his friends and completely abandon his home state and fans in Ohio, since his chance to get a ring is now incredibly likely. The 2006 finals were a very sad time for me, because the Dallas Mavericks were, at the time, one of my favorite teams. They were playing the series against the Miami Heat, whose team comprised of Shaq, Alonzo Mourning, and young Dwyane Wade. AND THAT’S IT. (Okay, I think Udonis Haslem was there too) Dallas was up 3-1 in the series, and I was a happy lad. And then Miami won the next three games, and I was a sad lad. The next year, Dallas won a whopping 67 games, and I was eager to see them go forth in the playoffs and win the championship that they so obviously deserved in 2006. (Go look up 2006 NBA finals conspiracy, the whole thing was rigged) Of course, Dallas’ run ended terribly in 2007 and they were knocked out by the Golden State Warriors. That’s right, the fucking Warriors. Yes, that WAS an 8-1 upset. Dallas has made the playoffs every year since, but this year was their best chance to reclaim their former glory, and their best hope for my current favorite NBA player, Dirk Novitzki to win a ring, since the Mavs are a very old team. But now the Bulls have failed me and let the Superfriends roll right by them, and they are sure to completely fucking obliterate Dallas, which will almost certainly lead me to tears and years of counseling. So that’s that.

In other news, later today (Friday), I will be beginning my huge fighting game tournament in Chicago, Ultimate Fighting Game Tournament 7. In hilarious news, I am in the same pool for the MvC3 tournament as motherfucking Justin Wong, the best player in the universe. So that’s really great for me. Yippee! Really looking forward to meeting him though, and the whole fighting game community really. Just sharing some thoughts and news I guess.

Summer/Updates

So I’m obviously no longer in school, and therefore I’m no longer in my writing class, but I’ll keep the tumblr just for the shits and giggles. In basketball news, the Grizzlies lost in game 7 against the Thunder, which is a bummer since they were looking tough, although it was to be expected. The Bulls are going to tear up the Heat, which is pretty sick. ThorZaIN, my Terran hero won the TSL3 in Starcraft II, which was amazing. I haven’t played any videogames at all in forever for some reason except for Melee, despite UFGT7 being around the corner. Also, PSN is back up, and I get inFAMOUS and LittleBigPlanet for free! Since I’ve been too busy the last few weeks to play MvC3 online anyways, this is pretty much just an epic win for me, as I get two free games and basically no real loss. Woo-hoo.

When I heard that we would be talking about remix culture, I knew exactly what to talk about. Team Teamwork is a group of DJs who mix not only great hip-hop songs, but also old videogame songs with modern-era hip-hop. The above video mixes the song “Lost Woods” from the classic N64 game, Ocarina of Time with the song Virginia from the hip-hop duo Clipse. Team Teamwork released an ENTIRE album of this kind of mash-up, entitled Ocarina of Rhyme. The album is available for download for free over the Internet. Team Teamwork has created a similar project with songs from the old Final Fantasy games, with the title Vinyl Fantasy. These projects might initially seem like copyright infringement, but due to the fact that these works can be enjoyed for free and the fact that it would be impossible to make money off of the songs, I don’t believe the songs to be infringing the original artists’ rights at all. I’m drawn to this kind of work for very apparent reasons. The music is good, and also packed to the brim with nostalgic value. If you didn’t play the Ocarina of Time when you were a kid, you were missing out. Many (most?) consider the game to be the greatest videogame of all time, which means a huge group of people experience a sort of trigger when they hear songs from the soundtrack of the game again. The nostalgia plus the great beats and rhymes carefully laid over them equals a great final project, and thanks to the glorious free release of the content, you don’t even have to be a pirate to enjoy it!

UFGT7

Last week I registered for my first major, national fighting game tournament, Ultimate Fighting Game Tournament 7 in Chicago. I entered myself into the tournaments for Marvel Vs. Capcom 3, a new entry in a decade-old series by Capcom in which Marvel superheroes and villains face off against Capcom video game characters, and also in Vampire Savior (Darkstalkers 3), an arcade game by Capcom from the 90s featuring fairy tale creatures (Frankenstein, Little Red Riding Hood, Sasquatch, Big Bad Wolf). Although it’s unlikely, placing in the MvC3 tournament could net me anywhere from my entrance fee to around $4,500. I’m much more likely to make the money in the Vampire Savior tournament, which could be a couple hundred dollars, based on how many people show up. This tournament draws competitors from all around the nation (hundreds from west coast, east coast, obviously huge midwest draw too), and even overseas. Link to the website:

So, yeah. I play Videogames competitively, in addition to playing Jazz and Classical Trombone, singing in Choir and Musical Theatre, and just being a college kid.
